Why Renovation Projects Rarely Follow a Straight Line (And Why That's Normal)

You've spent months thinking about your renovation. You've got ideas, you've made plans, and you're finally getting excited about seeing it all come together.

Then something changes.

Maybe your preferred builder isn't available when you'd hoped. Perhaps the quote takes longer than expected, or the pricing comes back higher than anticipated.

Suddenly, things aren't moving quite the way you pictured.

The reality is that renovations rarely follow a perfectly straight path. And while that can be frustrating, it doesn't necessarily mean anything has gone wrong.

A little example from behind the scenes

I'm currently working with homeowners who have spent time carefully planning their renovation with me.

We've worked through the layouts, selections and finer details, and all the design documentation is now complete.

They had a builder in mind and were waiting on pricing, but things haven't progressed quite as anticipated. So they've decided to explore quotes from other builders.

And that's okay.

Because their planning and documentation are already complete, they have a detailed package ready to share with other builders. No need to start the design process again or try to explain their vision through a collection of screenshots and conversations.

Of course, changing builders can still affect timelines and pricing, but having everything ready makes those next steps much easier.

Good Planning gives you options

One of the biggest benefits of planning early is having the flexibility to respond when circumstances change.

If builder pricing comes back higher than expected, you can review the design and explore adjustments.

If a product becomes unavailable, you have clear specifications to help find a suitable alternative.

And if you need to approach another builder, your plans, selections and scope of works are already documented.

Good planning doesn't mean everything will go perfectly. It means you're better prepared when things don't.

So, when should you start planning?

If you're considering a renovation in 2027, you might be thinking there's still plenty of time.

And depending on your project, there may well be.

But between developing layouts, selecting finishes, preparing documentation, obtaining builder quotes and organising approvals, the months can disappear surprisingly quickly.

Starting early gives you breathing room to make thoughtful decisions, explore options and adjust plans without feeling rushed.

Because renovating your home is a significant investment, and those decisions deserve time and consideration.

It's about being prepared, not predicting everything

No amount of planning can guarantee a renovation will be completely free of surprises.

But clear plans, selections and documentation give you a much stronger starting point for navigating them.

And that's something I really value in my design process. It's not just about creating a beautiful, functional home. It's about helping homeowners feel informed, confident and supported throughout the journey.
